Mala Derlson

Being the lonely child of a druid and a ranger, there really wasn’t any question about Mala’s walk of life. She grew up in southern Hullack Forest, Cormyr, in a small settlement of woodsmen, hunters and trappers.
Hullack is a primeval forest, once part of Cormanthor. It is filled with dark valleys and hidden dales. Legends of ghostly creatures and strange monsters pepper the local tales, and orcs goblinoids and even giants regularly descend from the nearby Thunder Peaks to raid on the few settlements in the Hullack Forest.

Growing up, she usually followed her father around the wood, learning about the fauna of the Hullack, while her mother taught her about the flora, such as Bowen’s Flower, Kirin’s Leaf and the rare Bark of the Turis.
Along the foothills of the Thunders Peaks many unusual plants grow, that can be ground into spices.

Mala was returning home from such an excursion of spice gathering, when she heard sounds of battle. As her father had taught her, she proceeded with stealth instead of just rushing forward. Bugbears and ettins, lead by a mountain giant, had stumbled across Mala’s home and were obviously looking for food and pelts, as an ettin was squabbling with its other head about who should have the most human meat and animal fur. Suddenly, the crackling sound of thunder, then lightning bolts shot down from the sky, scorching an killing many of the bugbears. “Mother!” Mala thought. “Thank the Goddess she’s alright!”

Then, the ground shook as an enormous mountain giant came running by, nearly stepping on Mala. In its hand it wielded a huge tree, which it slammed into the ground, knocking most defenders off their feet. “Bring me witch woman!” it commanded. “I will feast on her this day!” It was then she heard her father call out “Concentrate yer arrows on the giant!” The men scrambled to their feet, and vollies of arrows thudded against the giant’s thick skin. The mountain giant responded with making huge sweeping moves with the tree it wielded, and the men it struck flew backwards, screaming in pain and fear. Another lightning strike. The arrow-riddled giant roared in pain as lightning struck it, making it fall to its knees. Mala’s arrow hit the giant in the back of its head, but it was the charging ranger that pierced the giant’s heart with his longsword, felling the mighty beast.

That was the cue for the remaining marauders. They fled towards the Thunder Peaks, followed by a hail of arrows and victorious cheers.

Later that day, Mala was called inside by her father. “Yer mother and I have discussed it and we want ye to leave the forest. It is simply too dangerous for ye here.” Mala protested “But…” “No buts, Mala. It is settled.” Her father stepped in close and gave Mala a bear-hug. "We want ye to seek an old friend of ours, Branson Greff. He lives in the Oldwood Grove up in Daggerdale. Come back and see us from time to time, my dear daughter.”

After a tearful farewell, Mala turned north and started the long trek to Daggerdale. She hated towns. She hated to be a newcomer and most of all, she hated to leave her family and friends behind.

Three tendays later she found the Oldwood Grove and was as well-received as she could hope for. She actually befriended a funny Halfling called Sting, while in Dagger Falls, but to her great comfort she befriended a wolf in the Dagger Hills. He was given the name of Bytor.

While travelling with Sting, she took a keen interest in his ability to pick locks. So, he taught her. He also taught her how to hit the soft-spots on humanoids and other creatures.

Mala is very shy and is a very private person while in town, or around a crowd. On the other hand, when she’s in the wilderness she really shines like the Sun. She is gifted with a keen eye-sight that most elves could only long for. She favours her longbow, but will get down and dirty in melee if need be.
